Last year I made a 30 day commitment to myself to start my day with a fresh green juice before consuming anything else. This commitment changed my life. I not only gave myself a cup of liquid bhakti, but I completely gave up coffee! Yes! This was the best decision I ever made. Don’t get me wrong, I still drink chai tea, which has caffeine in it. However, I don’t crave coffee and I feel so much better about that.
My commitment to drinking green juices started after I read the witty, wise and inspiring book CRAZY SEXY DIET written by Kris Carr.
Her book is filled with top of the line information on health and wellness. She has survived stage 4 cancer of a very rare form. Although I am not a cancer survivor, she inspires me to go deeper and further with my own wellness that can keep me healthy and strong. As I grow older and wiser, I strongly believe in living longer. The better I feel, the more positive I become.
I went 12 strong yrs without getting any sort of bad cold or sinus infection and last winter, I got hit with a bad sinus infection. I tried beating the damn thing down by eating raw garlic, drinking NAKED juices (these juices don’t count as “juicing”) from the grocery store, getting weekly acupuncture, indulging in vitamin d and keeping up with my yoga practice. I knew I wasn’t getting any better after 3 weeks of blowing my nose and still seeing yellow crap on the tissue. I finally made myself go to the doctor after I was in child’s pose and could barely keep my forehead on the mat because it hurt so bad. This was a challenge for me to step up and go to a conventional western doctor to find out what the heck was going on. I mean really, I thought that my holistic approach to living was so good that I COULD NEVER GET SICK! Haha! yeah right!
After dragging myself out on a cold winter night and getting checked at Urgent Care, I found out that I had a sinus-infection. Boo whoo, poor me, what! Yeah, that’s exactly what I thought after I was prescribed antibiotics, which I was pretty freaked out about taking. I only did it because I needed to get better and I didn’t know any other way.
I am not a health expert and I still don’t know how to curve a sinus-infection without antibiotics, but I do think that a daily intake of green juice is a pretty smart way to prevent things from getting worse. It’s all about cleaning your system and getting rid of what doesn’t belong in what Kris calls your ‘God pod.’ I will say that it wasn’t long after I stopped taking the antibiotics that I started reading her book and committing to green juice in the morning. Thank goodness! I really think (or should I say I KNOW) that the juicing helped put the healthy cells back into my body that the antibiotics took.
Yes, juicing rocks! I love my juicer and I love adding veggies like Kale to my recipes. Oh yea, I forgot to mention (or maybe you already know) I LOVE KALE!

According to Kris, it’s best to drink your juice on an empty stomach. She says that mixing liquids with solids slows down the digestive process and that it’s best to have your juice and then wait 30-45 minutes before eating solid food.
She also says cucumbers make a great base for juicing. They’re filled with vitamin c and are highly alkalizing and cleansing. You can even start your juicing process with just cucumbers and then build your way into more leafy greens.
Here is a recipe that I use almost daily:
1 cucumber (peeled if conventional)
3 pieces of celery
3 leaves of kale
3 leaves of romaine lettuce
1 green apple
1 inch peeled ginger
